Kitty watched the volleyball game as she sunbathed by the pool. Only the guys were playing. Pretty much all of the girls were working on tans like she was.

Even Rogue was lying out here. Kitty glanced at her curiously. “Since when do Goths get tans?”

“Since never. I’m just out here for the company. I’ve got on max sunblock.”

“Yeah, we can’t let anybody, like, mistake you for a living person.”

Rogue shot her the finger, taking a swig from her beer.

Tabitha grabbed it out of her hand and examined it. “You did check the can this time, right? We don’t want the 4th of July party to end up like the last one. We might wind up with another set of tits or something.”

Rogue snorted. “Another set? Didn’t know you had the first pair. I don’t see any. Gimme my damn beer.”

“Somebody is handing out tits?” Rahne asked. “I’ll put my request in.”

Some of the guys were setting off fireworks. Jubilee was out there with them, firing her own out of her fingertips. It was pretty much all her power was good for.

Kitty heard a bamf and was suddenly in shadow. “Get out of my sun, blue boy.”

“All right.” Kurt jumped in the pool, making as big a splash as possible and showering her with water.

“Hey, Kurt,” Tabitha said when he surfaced. “When you get sunburned, do you turn purple?”

“I don’t get sunburned. I just port around too fast for the sun to hit me.”

Kitty looked around. “Where’s Amanda? I thought you were bringing her today.”

“She’s changing into her swimsuit. She told her parents that she was doing something else today, something non-mutanty, so she couldn’t wear it out of the house.”

“Stealth love,” Jean said. “You’re lucky to have her, Kurt. She’s sweet. Everyone else who was dating a normal got dumped.”

“I know. And she digs the fuzzy man, even without the image inducer. Where would I find another girl like that?”

“Where’s Storm?” Jean asked. “None of the adults are out here.”

“None of them are here at all,” Kurt said. “The Professor, Mr. McCoy, Storm, and Logan all went into town for something.”
