Alice said a nervous hello and sat down, near the door in case she needed a quick exit. The family looked at her in silence for several seconds while Kappu pulled something out of the corner of the tent. Alice recognised it immediately, her bag.

“That’s mine.” She demanded. Kappu nodded and returned it to her. Alice didn’t want to show distrust at the boy who’d promised to give her food and water, but she rooted through the bag. Everything was there.

Kappu nodded in understanding, but the rest of the family gave Alice a hurtful look. To try and relieve the developing tension Kappu introduced everyone.

“Alice, this is my father, Shalin. My mother Heleg and my sister (Alice breathed a quiet sigh of relief) Juliat. Everyone, this is Alice she is journeying to the eastern woods.”

Alice nodded and said hello, but still felt unwelcome. She sat in silence, staring at the fire. Her stomach growled loudly and she shuffled embarrassed. Kappu moved to sit next to her.

“I suppose you would like something to eat?” He asked curiously. Alice hadn’t eaten all day. She nodded eagerly.

“Yes please.”

Kappu led her outside, the night air was cold after the warmth of the tent. He took Alice to a nearby copse of trees, the branches hung heavy with long strips of meat.

“We place the meat here to keep it out of reach of animals, also to let it dry out, it lasts longer that way.” Most of the meat looked fresh, probably from the hung today. Kappu went through to some of the trees at the back of the group and pulled down two long strips of dried bison meat. Handing one to Alice he began to eat his own.

It didn’t taste too bad, but it made her thirsty.

“You will stay with my family tonight and tomorrow I will give you food and water, eight days worth will be all I can arrange.” Alice nodded gratefully.

“Thank you.” She said with a mouthful of meat. Then something dawned on her. “What do you want in return?” She asked, knowing what wonderland was like she could easily guess. She was surprised by what he said next.

“I wish to accompany you on your journey.” He said. “All my life I have travelled with my tribe. Gone where they have gone. But where they go is across these planes following the herd of blue bison, who only stay within the golden planes. I want to see more of the world.”

Alice hesitated, he sounded genuine in his cause, but could she really take him with her. She knew she could do with the company not to mention the protection she would get fro his hunting skills.

“Alright.” She submitted finally. “You can accompany me.” She looked down at her blanket/toga. “Do you think I may be able to get hold of my clothes again?” Kappu smiled slyly, Alice didn’t quite know what to make of it.

“That may take a little extra.” He said, stepping close to Alice.

He slowly reached up and gripped the blanket. Alice thought about stopping him, but she hesitated. Kappu gently pulled the toga away from her and tossed the blanket to the ground. Alice shivered in cold and excitement, she was slightly fearful, but at the same time she was curious. She wanted to know how good it was supposed to feel.
