Alice trudged her way through the forest, the hot sun pounded overhead and while the trees provided cover from its light, they were powerless against its heat. The air was close and she was sweaty and gasping, trying to catch her breath.

She had been walking for almost an hour now, if it wasn’t for the compass Alice would have been convinced that she was walking around in circles. There wasn’t a breeze to lift the heat, and the only sound she heard was that of her own movements.

“Curious.” She said to herself, she needed to hear a voice even if it was her own. “No birds beasts our any manner of insect to be found. In a forest such as this, I would have imagined it filled with life.” Her quiet words echoed through the trees and she felt a cold loneliness taking over her.

Her stomach growled loudly and she realised that she hadn’t actually eaten anything since the bite of scone at the tea party, which could have been hours ago. Excluding that, she hadn’t eaten all day.

“This task will not be easy.” Said the Storyteller, leading Alice thorough his home. He hadn’t been lying, there were books everywhere. Piles of them on shelves, creaking under the weight, larger piles on the floor making progress down the halls difficult. “The journey to the eastern woods alone is perilous. You will need to be well prepared.” He opened a door and entered a small room.

Inside, on a small table was a pile of clothes which Alice recognised, her own. There was also a large black box. The story keeper handed the clothes to Alice. She smiled and gripped them tightly, almost afraid that they would be gone again if she even blinked.

She stared in curiosity as he opened the box and pulled out items one at a time.

“Juice from the Mushroom of size. The blue bottle will make you grow taller, the red shorter. Remember which is which and always keep track of how much you have left. You don’t want to be stuck two inches tall.” He handed her two small bottles the size of her thumb. The story keeper plunged back into the box and pulled out a golden key.

Alice in New wonderland. Chapter III.

Grudgingly she turned back to the nightdress. It wouldn’t be appropriate if she needed to make a quick getaway. But it was all she had that would cover her properly. She grudgingly put it back on and descended the stairs that were through the left door.

The stairs led to a single vast room. Shelves lined every wall and stood in organised rows in the space between the walls. The whole place was a vast library. The shelves stretched ten feet tall and wide. Each shelf was filled with books, an inch thick an organised into colours, almost a different colour on every shelf. Every colour and every shade of colour was in that room.

To her left were a table and two large leather chairs. Old and worn, the brown leather was thin in places and some of the stuffing was peeking out of small holes. One of the chairs was occupied by the man the mad hatter had called Jacque. In his hands he held a book with a cover the same colour and shade as his blue suit and turban. On the table sat another book of the same colour, a quill was wriggling across it’s page, writing frantically. If she weren’t in wonderland, Alice would have been surprised at such a sight.

Jacque looked at her and rested the book on his lap. He pointed to the chair at his side and Alice sat down. “Wonderland has changed while you have been away Alice.” He said looking at her. “Who are you?” She asked. “And where am I?” He smiled and glanced down at the book on his lap. “You are in my home. This is the library, it takes up most of the house. It would be hard to find a room that did not have a bookshelf or two in it. The only rooms that are currently unoccupied by the books are the bathroom and bedroom. As for who I am, I have several names. The mad hatter knows me as Jacque; the man with the blue suit. Other know my as Marcus; a hermit of the western woods. Some call me Lucian and know me as a magician. Very few know my real title and no one knows my true name. I am the story keeper. The guardian of wonderlands history. The custodian of its secrets. I know everything is happening and has happened in wonderland since it began.”  “What happened to this place? Wonderland wasn’t like this when I came the first time.” She asked. Jacque, Marcus, or whatever his name was, indicated the book in his lap. “I was just reading about your adventures when you were here first time. Not a lot of people come to wonderland twice. I had been here several years when you arrived.” “What do you mean?” Interrupted Alice. “The people of wonderland are eternal. They grow old, die but then are reborn, young and healthy. It is wonderland that changes not them. But we story keepers do not come from wonderland, we come from earth. I was originally from earth just like you, I took over from the last story keeper ten years ago now. One day a young man or woman will come along and they will take over from me and I will be aloud to return home.

“Time has no meaning here you know. Which means when I leave I will return to wherever and whenever I want. I will go back to my wife and children, just moments after I left.”

Alice nodded along in silence. She had figured out that wonderland had no time. She had managed to return to her tutor merely an hour or so after she’d left when she’d actually spent days in wonderland. The story keeper continued. “Each different colour represents a different story keeper. Each book records one year of wonderland history. If you looked through this library you would find some keepers stayed here for ten years, some twenty. One even stayed for almost seventy years.”

Alice looked at the thousands of books in the library, how long was wonderlands history? “Wonderland changed two years ago. There was a war. Do you remember who was in charge when you were last here?” He asked. Alice nodded, the memory of a loud woman screaming OFF WITH HER HEAD had kept her awake several nights. “The queen of hearts.” Alice confirmed. The story keeper nodded. “The queen of spades rose with her armies and started a war, which the queen of hearts couldn’t win. Her husband, the king of hearts is missing, no one knows where he is. Her husband lost, her army defeated the queen fled and is now living in a small cabin in the eastern woods seven days travel from here. She is now the Maid of hearts, her title was lost when her crown was taken.

“The queen of spades if young and demanding sex wise. Unfortunately the king of spades is much older than her and is unable to *rise* to her demands. If you know what I mean. The maid of hearts needs to be restored to the throne, she needs to become queen again and you are the only one in wonderland that is basically able to say no.”  “What about you? Why don’t you go looking for her?” She shouted. He shook his head. “I am a story keeper, I watch and record. I am unable to directly interfere with the natural course of wonderland. I should not have interfered to get you here, but I did because it is for the greater good of wonderland. Alice you are the only hope for wonderland. You must take this quest to find the maid of hearts and restore her to the throne or wonderland will cease to exist in just a few years.”

Alice fell into silence. This was a serious matter, the fate of this magnificent place that had brought her such happiness when she was young hung on her shoulders. if she failed then wonderland would be lost and destroyed. But she also knew she couldn’t just leave it, wonderland was getting worse, changed and twisted by the sexual desires of its queen. What choice did she have. “When do I begin?”

Alice approached the sounds of laughter, a smile slowly spreading on her face. She pushed a few low branches aside and stepped into a small clearing.

There was a long table, a full tea service, complete with scones that had jam and cream. The table had a dozen places set, but only five people sitting in the chairs. A man with white hair, dressed in a violently purple top hat and lime green suit sat at the head of the table. A hare in a bright red smoking jacket sat next to him. A white rabbit in a small black waistcoat, with a gold pocket watch, sat opposite the hare. And a strange man with dark skin, dressed in a sky blue suit, and a large blue turban sat next to the rabbit. He was the one smoking the from a long hookah, it was from him that Alice could smell the opium.

It was her old friends, the mad hatter, the march hare and the white rabbit, who the man in the blue suit was Alice didn’t know, but she supposed wonderland had lots of people and creatures she’d never met before. That was the whole point of coming back, new people, new places and new adventures.

They all had stopped talking and laughing and stared at Alice with curiosity. Finally, after a minute of uncomfortable silence, the mad hatter rose to his feet. “Hello.” He said pleasantly. “Won’t you join us for a cup of tea?” Alice couldn’t curtsy without and dress (only men bowed), she compromised by slightly bending her knees and adding a nod to the head. Creating a mixture between curtsy and bow.  “Don’t mind if I do.” She said taking a seat opposite the man in the blue suit.  “Scone?” Asked the March hair, handing her the plate of cakes. Alice took one and placed it on a saucer. The mad hatter handed her a cup of tea and she sipped at it slowly.  “Do you like it?” Asked the white rabbit. Alice nodded her head. “Yes, it’s quite nice.”

The March hair felt the material of her jacket. “Why don’t you take that off?” He asked. Now that Alice thought about it, she was rather warm, also, it was rude to keep on coats and jackets while taking tea. “I think I shall.” She pulled it off and placed it onto the empty chair next to her and took a bite of her scone. “Do you like it?” Asked the March hare. Alice in New wonderland. Chapter I

Alice stared out of her bedroom window and sighed. She was just so bored. Her eighteenth birthday had passed several days ago and her joy had left with the party. Her cat Dina lay on the ledge beside her, sleeping in the sun.

Alice remembered little about her adventures in wonderland, which had happened almost ten years ago to the day.

Her tutor had decided that since it was such a nice day that they should have their lesson outdoors. Then she’d seen the white rabbit and the whole crazy adventure began. There were only bits and pieces that she managed to recall, mostly in her dreams. But what she did remember most of all, was that despite all of the confusion, she’d enjoyed her time in wonderland.

Alice turned away from the window and wandered away from the view. She had grown bored with the way her life was going in the last few years. Nothing that had happened had ever come close to the excitement of her adventure. It was because of this boredom that Alice had been trying to get back to wonderland. She didn’t believe that she simply dreamed the whole thing, wonderland, although it had been unbelievable, it had felt so real to her.

Alice had spent many hours in the expansive library in her families’ home. Wonderland had become an obsession for her and she had read endless volumes trying to find clues as to its existence. Alice had found only vague references in a few volumes on mythology. If you looked hard enough, you could find out anything you wanted.

*Legends of heathen tribes.* Was the one volume where she’d found the most information. She read stories of a tribe people who had stepped into twisted realities and came home with tales that were almost unbelievable. Most importantly she was trying to find a way to get back. The wild adventures of wonderland were just the spice she needed in her life. After all the hours of research, she had managed to work out that an entrance to wonderland didn’t truly exist in the real world, but they were formed by the desires of humans.

A belief that was supported by what happened to her in her childhood. She had been bored with her life at the time and wanted so much to have an exciting adventure that an entrance to wonderland was formed in a nearby rabbit hole.
