Fears and desires between Bart and Lisa Simpson

Dreams come true

‘It’s a good thing Homer isn’t here,’ Lisa thought as she played the blues on her saxophone.  She had not felt well today at school and hoped that her instrument would help soothe her as it often did, but today it failed at the task.  She had too much on her mind to let the music reach her heart.  Even when she tried to do some homework to push her ill thoughts aside, she simply couldn’t concentrate and had taken the surprising decision to put it aside.  Besides, she knew Mrs. Hoover wouldn’t mind since after all, Lisa was the best student in class and even without the home work, would be able to score straight As.
The ordeal had started the day before, as Lisa was cruising on her sax, deciding to play one last song and then write in her diary.  When she played, she didn’t always consciously choose a song; sometimes she just let her fingers play by themselves and choose by themselves, almost as if the song were her master rather then the opposite.  That night, she played a song by the late Bleeding Gums Murphy, one of her mentors and best friends.  The soft rhythm had made her a bit melancholic and as she blew the last note, a tear in her eye, she had thought: ‘that was for you Bleeding Gums.’  She had then turned her head to the album of the artist she had, Sax on the Beach.
Even after so long, Lisa still couldn’t believe that she actually owned the very rare album.  And more surprising was that her brother Bart had been the one to buy it for her in an unexpected selfless act. Just thinking about the circumstances, how he had been lucky to have that much money but still decided to spend it on her, brought another tear to her eye.  Neither sibling had told anyone about the gesture, Bart wanting to keep the generous act a secret for some obscure reason.
She put the saxophone aside, her brother still the center of her train of thoughts.  ‘Then again, I don’t really understand him.  No one does.’  Every time Lisa thought she had him all figured out as a bad boy, Bart seemed to pull off a selfless caper which threw her off completely.  Even their mother didn’t completely understand the boy but of course she still loved him all the same.  After a while, Lisa accepted that to comprehend Bart would require more than simple deductive reasoning.  Maybe…
Bart was disappointed.  Sitting on his bed, in the room adjacent to his sister’s, he had been listening to the song for many minutes now.  Although he would never admit it to a soul, he loved to hear Lisa play her saxophone and tonight especially since the notes seemed to reflect the melancholy of his soul.  He hated that he had to hide his emotions like that to the world lest he wouldn’t get the respect he needed to survive school.  But survival wasn’t a choice, it was a necessity and along the years, he had at times acted a bit too extreme for the people around him and his family.  Those extremes still helped his case at school, but it did come at a price.
But under all of his misdeeds, Bart hid true and pure emotions.  Some part of the untameable bad boy act was his true personality, but he still had a certain desire for peace and certainly did not want to make his family and friends miserable.  He could never forget what had happened during hockey game opposing him to his sister who served as goal tender to the other team.  The opposing team had roughed up one of their players and Bart had been offered a penalty shot.  To the outside world, it had seemed like a simple game opposing two teams in the junior series finale.  For the Simpson family however, it was able a brother and sister out for blood on the ice.  This penalty shot would determine the victor.

Bart wanted to make the shot badly, he craved the glory of victory and could not let a girl, let alone his own sister, best him at hockey.  As he prepared his shot however, surges of memories had flown back to his mind and he hesitated.  He remembered the good times when he was younger and her even more so, when he had no act to keep up and how well they got along.  And then surprisingly, Lisa had stepped out of the way, leaving Bart for a clear shot.  That sole gesture of sibling love had made Bart hesitate even more and in the end, he couldn’t make the shot.  Although the game had been a null, they both had been winners, personally.
Over time, Bart had let some of the bad boy go and shown his appreciation for his sister a bit more.  Not that he didn’t bully her sometimes, it was after all his job as a big brother, but he was also highly protective of her and as time passed, he started to appreciate Lisa more then he thought he could and even more then a brother normally should.  The feelings made Bart afraid about everything, because he didn’t want to be perceived as weird and especially didn’t want to scare her away.  They had been the first glimpses of feeling love.
Unknown to him however, Lisa tentatively shared the feelings her brother had for her.  And she was having as much of a hard time dealing with those emotions.  Lisa wanted to call it love, but could it really be?  If really she loved her brother like this, then it was a lewd love and she couldn’t accept nor afford to be that person.  One day, she would become someone very important and would need a clean past to be credible.  And besides, just because Bart had random acts of generosity didn’t make him someone she could be with, brother or not.  She couldn’t stand childish attitudes, even if it came from children.  They were too irresponsible and immature which greatly contrasted her own attitude which was closer to an adult.  Lisa often felt alone for that reason, knowing no adult could ever love a child.
Her borther’s best friend Milhouse had been among those she rejected.  Lisa knew Milhouse was a good boy with a good heart and certainly not dumb.  But he was also very naïve, easy to influence and had a typical boyish attitude, preferring to read comic books or be lead to misdeeds by Bart rather then settle down and act more grown up.  It angered her somewhat as well because she felt Milhouse had the potential to do so much more if only he set his mind to it.
Bart was the very opposite of his friend with a strong willpower and character.  He was proud to be his own person, writing his rules as he went along and that made him very hard to understand at times.  It made him very versatile, sometimes for better, but mostly for worst.  At the same time, it showed that he had a strong character and Lisa admired that.  He could make mistakes, like cutting Jebediah Springfield’s statue’s head to gain popularity, but overall he was just a troublemaker rather then a destroyer and if his strength of character were less erratic, he would make a wonderful leader.
‘But Lisa could never feel anything for me,’ Bart decided and sighing very loudly.  It made him feel very sad to realise the horrible truth.  He felt very inadequate for Lisa and wished he was smarter so his sister could admire him like he did.  Many times he had tried to become smarter, like reading books or getting tutored.  He had Milhouse tutor him in secret for a while, but Bart simply couldn’t keep his attention up.  The only teacher who had truly managed to keep him interested was his mother, but he couldn’t afford to have a momma’s boy image.
There had been a moment during which Bart had once a small glimpse of hope that a relationship was possible.  Through some freak accident, his sister had briefly dated Nelson, one of the school bullies.  At first he had been crushed, but the relationship had not lasted for long, Nelson ending up to be too much for Lisa who desired someone more sensible.  Bart was no choir boy (at least not anymore), but if there had been a possibility between Lisa and Nelson, there might be one between her and her brother as well.  After all, he was much more sensible then him.
The boy had carefully planned his move, but ended up putting all of it to waste.  He had subtly tried to ask Lisa if there was a possibility between them, but either Lisa didn’t understand or she thought it to queer to even consider.  After receiving a very evasive negative answer, Bart had decided to abandon his plans.  He tried to reason that it was for the best and that he still had other prospects.  He could easily charm either of the twins and he had several other potential girls in the past.  But even with the girls who weren’t as crazy as Jessica Lovejoy, it never was Lisa.  He couldn’t really care about then; after all, one can not guide his heart so easily.  Relationships failed and he always ended up alone but he never cared about them.
‘I wish Bart would just make a move,’ Lisa thought with annoyed anger.  ‘He knows I’m not good with these things.  And he’s the man, it’s his job to ask out, not mine.’  But she knew it wasn’t so simple.  Bart had some glimpses of shyness and it was enough to keep him at bay, if even it was what he desired.  Lisa had once thought he wanted her, at least he seemed to be putting out for her, but always she was caught off guard and too scared of the consequences to use the right words.  She didn’t even know what she could possibly say to him.  Lisa wanted it, but it was very wrong.
In retrospect, she realised that she was the one to blame, the one who had blown it time and time again.  Bart had possibly tried to make moves in the past, but Lisa always remained of ice.  He needed encouragement to proceed and instead, she had let him down.  He decided that tonight was as good a time as ever to make amends, even if it meant putting herself on line and risking looking like a fool.  Maybe she imagined it all and Bart was nowhere near interested in her but she would try.  Failure to even try would hurt even more.
Lisa slowly got up and left her room, her hands shaking and her breath short.
She found her brother standing in the middle of the hallway, a concerned look on his face.  Both the siblings had the same idea at once and Bart had frozen half way.  They looked at each other silently for a long time, knowing what they wanted to say but unable to do so.  Memories of the happy times with his sister came back to mind and Bart smiled.  His muscles eased up and his nervousness was forgotten.  He advanced towards his sister.
Lisa knew what was to come.  She had desired it for a long time and now knew the wait was over.  She smiled as well and met with Bart.  They had no reason to speak, their eyes told everything.  Softly, their lips met and their tongues danced the waltz of eternal love.  They were young, not even teenagers, but love knew no bounds.  Lisa closed her eyes and let herself drift in the passion of her brother.  Bart kept them opened, not wanting to lose a moment of looking at the most beautiful creature he knew.
The seal of love broke, their lips parting and Lisa opened her eyes once more.  Her brother offered his hand and she took it, knowing that she would follow him wherever he wished to lead her.  They returned to Bart’s room and Lisa closed the door.  Dreams come true.
